Meet the Owner of Pop Up Pooch Spa!

We took some time to ask Ciara a few questions about her life and career choices that led her to become a business owner and dog groomer. Here is what she had to say! *Bonus points for her answer to the food question!

Why did you become a dog groomer?

I actually never wanted to be a dog groomer. My salon manager turned mentor told me I worked well with animals and that I should groom dogs. After years of convincing, I finally went to a grooming academy and got certified to be a groomer. Started my grooming journey in 2010, and became a groomer in 2012.

What is your biggest pet peeve about being a traveling groomer that’s easily fixable?

The only thing that I could say would be a pet peeve would be the hunching over the tub to wash the dogs but I have recently purchased a portable dog tub that goes in the tub and is easy to bathe small to medium-sized dogs in.

Do you have any outside inspiration for your daily life? If so, from where or who?

My grandmother and mother are my inspiration for life. My grandmother was a college professor teaching bilingual studies and she taught me the power of perseverance. My mother is such a giver and hard worker that I tend to emulate that in my career and be kind to every person I come in contact with. They taught me how to become the woman that I am today.

Any advice for up-and-coming Black pet lovers who are interested in breaking out into the pet care industry?

Sounds cliche, but just be yourself. Let the world know of your skillset and what you bring to the industry. Whether it be your knowledge of animal breeds, how to care for senior animals, or having a fashion sense for the everyday pet, be unapologetically yourself and be confident in what you love to do. I LOVE making dogs look and feel their very best and I love to have fun while doing that. So I make sure to let that be known whenever someone comes into contact with me.

Tell us about yourself!

I’m a Jersey girl who grew up with dogs. I love all different types of animals and I wanted to be a vet. I’m very adventurous and love outdoor activities. My dogs and I go to the park or beach when the weather is right. I’m a fun outgoing person who just wants to have a good time.

What’s something you wish someone had told you before becoming a groomer?

How long it will take to perfect your grooms. (I will always feel like I can get better. I’m my own worst critic)

If you have 1 million dollars given to you, what would you do with it?

I would invest 30% into stocks and IRA’s, take 20% to pay off debts and use for personal use and the other 50% into expanding my business and giving back to the community.

How can others support you as a minority in the pet care industry?

Just by sharing the information I have on caring for your pet through grooming maintenance, health, and wellness. Spreading joy is my purpose in life.

Random question: Pancakes vs Waffles which one is the best and why?

Hmmm. I tend to go for the waffles just because it's easy to pop them in the toaster and they’re nice and toasted and the syrup sits nicely in the grooves 😋.
